1992 GMC Typhoon Conversion to Turbo LS6 Power

My plans have changed since the inception of this project, and I think a web site update is well past due so here goes .....

Initially I wanted an all out race truck that could run a built LS6 and 15+ pounds of boost on pump gas and still be reliable for everyday use. This combination (properly tuned) would have allowed me possibly somewhere in the neighborhood of 750-850 AWHP.

However after being exposed to SCCA style cone racing by a friend, I have decided that while drag racing is indeed cool, my money would be better spent making the truck handle well too. Since drag racing it costs a huge amount of money just to get "LESS" seat time I decided that a nice leisurely 600 AWHP will be more than attainable and the ability to corner and stop has moved up the list significantly.

Since I refuse to cage the truck, the initial dreams of having 750-850 AWHP, while fun, are realistically pointless. I wouldn't be allowed to compete at just about any decent 1/4 mi track in the country for failure to comply with the rules for the appropriate ET's that the truck would run.

In addition to this issue, I've stepped back from the idea of 'having to wrench' on the truck every time I drove it, or atleast frequently. I want a good reliable platform that I can go out and beat the piss out of when I feel like it, and not cringe at the thought of something always breaking (as with the 4.3L at same HP levels). You are invited to follow along with my build as I go I intend to fully highlight the modifications as I do them.

As of early June 2006, here is the current build plan:

2000 LS1 Engine from a Camaro SS with 28,000 mi

*(Fully stock internals to begin with, only a custom sheetmetal oil pan to clear the front differential)

Futral Motorsports Turbo Spec'd Camshaft with Stock PCM running custom OS and tune

* ( EFILive version 7.0 PCM editing software definitely a datalogging wideband O2)

"Built" 4L80e 4 speed Overdrive Transmission

*(Complete with Alto Red Clutches, Kolene Steels, upgraded Sprag and a Transgo HD2 Shift Kit)

Stock SyTy Transfer Case

* ( Oddly enough, the stock transfer case has run well into the sub 10 second range with little to no issues)

Stock SyTy GM 7.625 Rear Differential

*(with an ADDCO sway-bar, LS1 Disc Brake Conversion, Eaton Posi, and T/A Performance Girdle Cover Kit)

Stock SyTy GM 7.25" Front Differential

*(equipped with Powertraxx Lock-Right Locker and freshly overhauled with new bearings)

JS Manufacturing Coil-Over Suspension Kit and QA1 10-way adjustable shocks

*(initial plans were to allow clearance for exhaust, and removal of torsion bar setup, however, this kit pays other dividends as well)
